This article is part of a series of articles sharing the reasoning behind Christian family’s opinions based on Biblical understanding of issues. Reasons are given for both the answers Yes and No.
Does it matter if I hire a midwife or a doctor?
Some women feel it doesn’t matter.
Women who fee it is important to have a Midwife often share…
1 Timothy 2:9 I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,
1 Corinthians 12:23 and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty,
I am interested in remaining as modest as allowable during labor. I understand there are parts that need to be exposed, but I don’t need to expose them to a man who is not my husband.
Matthew 9:12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
I don’t mind using doctors when I need them, but pregnancy is not an illness. Instead it is a normal and healthy state for my body to be in. It is not the well who need a doctor, but the sick. A midwife is trained in the normalcy of birth. I can always get the advice or assistance of a doctor if I have a problem.
Genesis 35:17 And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for you have another son.”
Exodus 1:17 The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.
The biblical model is for a midwife to be attending the laboring woman. I want to follow that model.

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
I am not concerned so much about who attends me, as long as I have someone who is willing to work with me to achieve my goals.
Proverbs 15:22 Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.
In my area, there are no midwives, or they have to practice illegally. My choice is reduced to hiring a doctor or being alone. I don’t feel safe being alone because I don’t have any experience with giving birth. I believe my doctor’s experience and knowledge make her a valuable part of our birth team.
